Northern Schools Trust Celebrates British Science Week 2025

British Science Week 2025 was an incredible celebration of science, innovation, and discovery across the Northern Schools Trust involving students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC, North Liverpool Academy, The Studio Liverpool, and our Primary Schools Four Oaks Primary, Roscoe Primary, New Park Primary and Thomas Gray Primary.
To mark British Science Week 2025, students took part in a series of exciting activities designed to inspire curiosity and develop scientific understanding. From hands-on biomedical research to engaging demonstrations and creative competitions, here are some of the highlights from this fantastic week of learning.
Engaging with our Primary Schools during Science Week
Pupils from schools shared a building to learn about the Business of Science competition and were introduced to the CREST Star and SuperStar awards, designed to spark curiosity and creativity in science from an early age. Students completed hands-on activities such as:
- Bumblebee Mystery: Exploring the importance of pollinators and their habitats.
- Camouflaged Creatures: Discovering how trees and wildlife support each other.
- Cheesy Challenge: Investigating how milk is transformed into cheese.
- Surprising Stains: Learning about colour changes in materials.
- Recycle Reuse: Creating recycled paper and discussing sustainability.
- Inclusive Games: Designing games that are accessible for all abilities.
Every student received an entry into the Business of Science competition and either the Star or SuperStar CREST Award, ensuring that science week was both rewarding and memorable.
Business of Science Competition Across the Trust
Secondary students from across our schools also rose to the challenge of the Business of Science competition. After assemblies to introduce the competition, students formed teams to tackle sustainability-themed discovery projects. Activities were designed to encourage teamwork and creative thinking, with every participant earning a Discovery CREST Award.
Teams worked on innovative solutions to real-world problems and submitted their entries for internal judging. We are excited to announce that the Trust Final that took place on Wednesday 30th April, where students will present their ideas at the CUC building home to Liverpool Life Sciences and The Studio. Finalists will have the chance to win an inspiring day out, including a half-day at a science museum and hands-on experiences in the electron microscope lab.
Winners from this final will go on to represent the Trust at the National Finals on 15th May.
Biomedical Science Masterclass at the University of Liverpool
A-level Biology students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and North Liverpool Academy attended a fascinating Biomedical Science Masterclass at the University of Liverpool. This session provided students with valuable insights into university-level research and laboratory techniques.
Students explored advanced topics such as DNA separation using electrophoresis and examined cancer cells under a microscope before and after treatment with anti-cancer drugs. Afternoon talks from leading researchers covered cell imaging advances, model organisms in research, and pathways into university science courses.
This experience gave students a deeper appreciation of biomedical science and inspired many to consider careers in research and healthcare.
Science Showcase Presentations
To conclude British Science Week, students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool presented their innovative projects at a Science Showcase event. Highlights included:
- An eco-friendly stove for use in developing countries.
- A self-guided, life-saving rope for water rescues.
- A lamp powered by bioluminescent organisms.
- Wildlife tracking data analysis from orphaned elephants in Zambia in collaboration with the Institute of Research in Schools.
These inspiring projects showcased the creativity, teamwork, and passion of our students and were a fitting finale to an action-packed week.
Wonderstruck: The Power of Physics
Students from North Liverpool Academy, along with primary pupils from New Park and Four Oaks, enjoyed an unforgettable science show from Wonderstruck. The thrilling demonstrations included:
- A pulse jet engine.
- The famous bed of nails.
- Explosive rocket fuel experiments.
The show brought physics to life in an exciting and accessible way, inspiring students of all ages to explore the wonders of science.
Unilever Aspire Programme Finals
Students from Liverpool Life Sciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool reached the finals of the Unilever Aspire programme at Port Sunlight, focusing on innovation and sustainability in personal care products.
Two teams presented their projects to industry experts. One UTC team won the ‘Best Innovation 2025’ award with their ‘Cool Comfort’ product — a cooling stick designed to support menopausal women, an often-overlooked group in product development.
This invaluable experience helped students apply their scientific knowledge to real-world challenges, building both their confidence and their understanding of careers in science.
Trust Science Solutions Competition Final
On Wednesday 30th April, our talented young scientists from across the trust came together to compete in the first-ever Science Solutions Competition Final – a fantastic event celebrating the creativity, innovation, and scientific thinking of pupils from across our family of schools. From our youngest Reception children to aspiring Year 10 scientists, the final was a true showcase of ideas, talent and teamwork.
This trust-wide competition encouraged pupils to identify real-world problems and come up with inventive solutions. The shortlisted finalists gathered to present their projects – and what a remarkable showcase it was! Each pupil spoke with confidence and professionalism, showing real passion for their ideas and a desire to make a positive difference.
